As many of you will not have stumbled across 'Goth Day' before you're probably thinking "WTF!"
It started in 2009 when BBC Radio in the UK announced they be looking at various musical subcultures over a weekend and 22nd May would be 'Goth Day'.. from there a few of us ran with the idea and in the course of a week managed to convince people we should make more of it, and celebrate it properly.
Some people dressed a little more 'goth' for work that day, others contacted thier local radio stations and sent in requests for goth songs, nothing too obscure, just stuff they were likely to have, and a lot of us were successful getting tracks from Siouxsie, The Cure, The Cult and other 'big names' played.
Others made 'goth day' smiley cakes, and took them into work to spread the word, more people still changed their avatar on various networking sites and forums to the 'official' smiley for a while. We had fun. And that really was the point of it, as well as to show the world we were proud to be 'goth'.
So here we are at the start of 2010, a new decade, and planning on making 'Goth Day' even bigger this year. Wanna join us?
You don't need to plan a huge event, unless you want to, take what we started, and run with it. You don't need to hold an event on the actual day if that's not possible, close to it will do
Maybe you don't want to actually run an event (I can understand how scary that must be for some of you), if that's the case just go to a gig or your local goth club that month, simply support your scene. Maybe have a word with your local club/promoter, get them involved. Perhaps use the date to raise money for a charity or local good cause?
Keep your eye on the website too, where you'll find artwork and banners and things to download - www.worldgothday.com
Anyway, enough from me. This is our day, lets make it something special!
